DecodeThis Experts terms of use
Effective October 8, 2026 · VIN Hunter LLC
These terms are an agreement between you and VIN Hunter LLC ("we", "us"), which runs the DecodeThis Experts app and decodethis.net. By using either, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use DecodeThis Experts. Our privacy policy, at decodethis.net/privacy, says what we do with your data.
Using DecodeThis Experts
DecodeThis Experts is for adults, 18 and over.
- You can use the app as a guest, with no sign-in. A guest's cars belong to that phone's guest account: if you delete the app, you may lose access to them.
- Signing in with Apple or Google keeps your cars on your account, so they're there on your other phones. Some features, like sharing a car and buying credits, need you to be signed in.
- You're responsible for what happens on your account, so keep your phone and your Apple or Google sign-in secure.
AI advice, not an inspection or appraisal
The DecodeThis Experts are AI (Anthropic's Claude), each written to look at a car from a different angle. What they say is an opinion to help you decide what to check, not a certified inspection, appraisal, valuation, vehicle history or title report, or legal or financial advice.
- They can be wrong or miss things. They work from what you give them: your photos, the VIN, sheets and listings you add, and what they find on the web.
- VIN decoding, parts codes and recalls come from DecodeThis, and recent sales from classic.com and other auction and market sites. That data can be incomplete or out of date.
- Before you buy, have the car inspected by someone qualified and check its paperwork. Decisions about a car, and what you pay for it, are yours.
Your content
Your photos, notes and the other things you add stay yours.
- You let us store and process them only to run DecodeThis Experts for you: to keep them on your account, to send them to the services named in our privacy policy (the experts' AI, for example), and to show them back to you.
- When you share a car, you also let us show what you chose to share on its public page and, if you turn on "Show this car on decodethis.net", on the event's page and as Featured Car of the Week.
- That permission ends when you delete the content, stop sharing the car or delete your account, apart from copies other apps already made of a link's preview.
- Only add what you have the right to: your own photos, or ones you may use.
Shared pages are public
A shared car's page can be seen by anyone with its link. It never names you, but what you choose to show (photos, verdict, price, the full VIN) is public while it's shared. You're responsible for what you share.
- Don't share other people's personal information, such as a seller's name, phone number or documents.
- Don't misrepresent a car, for example to mislead a buyer.
- You can stop sharing at any time in the app, and the page comes down within a minute.
Acceptable use
Please don't use DecodeThis Experts to:
- break the law, or help someone else do so, including fraud;
- share anything you don't have the rights to, or that's sexual, violent, hateful, harassing or otherwise abusive;
- get into anyone else's account or data, or try to get around the app's limits, its credits or its security;
- overload, scrape or copy the service, the experts' output or the data behind them in bulk, or reverse engineer the app, except where the law allows it.
How we may remove a shared page
Anyone can report a shared page from the link at its bottom, or by emailing info@decodethis.com. We look at reports, but we can't promise to review every one or to act on it.
- We may take a shared page down, or take a car off an event's page or Featured Car, if it breaks these terms or the law, or if someone shows us it uses their work without permission. We may do so without warning.
- A page we take down shows that it's no longer available. Your car and its data stay on your account.
- If you think we got it wrong, email us.
Credits
Credits pay for expert takes, replies and session summaries in the app: one credit is one take, or three replies. They're a license to use those features, not money: they have no cash value and can't be transferred, sold or exchanged.
- Credits you buy in a pack never expire. Credits from the monthly subscription carry over from month to month, up to 75.
- A take or reply that fails gives its credit, or its reply, back automatically.
- When you delete your account, its unspent credits are written off and aren't refunded.
- Refunds are handled by the App Store or Google Play. If a store refunds a purchase, we remove that purchase's credits that haven't been spent; ones already spent stay spent.
- Prices are the ones the store shows when you buy, and may change.
Ending your account
- You can delete your account at any time: in the app, go to Me and choose Delete account. Deleting it removes its cars, photos, notes, conversations and shared pages, as our privacy policy describes.
- We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, harms other people or the service, or that the law requires us to close. Where we can, we'll tell you why.
- If we close an account for breaking these terms, its unspent credits end with it, unless the law says otherwise.
- We may change or stop offering parts of DecodeThis Experts. If we ever close the service, we'll give notice in the app first.
Events and other companies
DecodeThis Experts isn't affiliated with the auction houses, shows, manufacturers or sites it mentions, and their names and marks belong to them. Event pages list cars DecodeThis Experts users saw there; they aren't the event's own listings.
No guarantees
We work to keep DecodeThis Experts accurate and available, but it's provided as it is and as available. To the extent the law allows, we don't promise that it will be error-free or always available, or that what the experts or the data say is correct or complete.
Limits on our liability
To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for losses from decisions you make about a car, including what you pay for it. Our total liability to you for anything to do with DecodeThis Experts is limited to $50. Nothing in these terms limits liability the law doesn't let us limit.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The date at the top says when they last changed, and for a change that matters we'll also tell you in the app. Using DecodeThis Experts after a change means you accept the new terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Ohio, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.
